The Mackenzie Country is hard to beat for the diversity of lake fishing from both boat and shore.
Lake Ohau Quarters is an excellent base for your fishing trip, with plenty of beautiful spots nearby including many within easy walking distance. The lake itself offers mighty fine, high country fishing with clear water and spectacular alpine views. Open all year round, winter fishing is particularly stunning, when the surrounding peaks are covered in snow.
Lake Ohau is fed by many tributaries, including the Dobson, Hopkins, Temple and Maitland Streams. The Dobson is open to fishing from the first weekend of November until the 30th of April; the is lake open all year round.
With a boat you can try your luck at other fishing spots, such as drift fishing over the weed beds, trolling, and accessing the Hopkins/Dobson River Mouth.
Less than an hour’s drive away are many miles of picturesque hydropower canals, offering the chance to catch the fish of a lifetime. Trout in excess of 10kg are not uncommon and in recent times a few have tipped the scales at more than 15kg! The canals are also home to large salmon that have escaped from local salmon farms and are perfect for the table. We provide an outside sink and bench for cleaning them up, and a barbecue to grill them on. Feel free to bring your own smoker.
