The highlight of November at Lake Ohau Quarters was hosting a painting retreat led by two incredible artists, Richard Robinson and Scott Hamill.
Richard Robinson, one of New Zealand’s most celebrated landscape artists, is renowned for his breathtaking works that grace private residences and corporate collections worldwide. His talent as a teacher shines through in his instructional videos on My Painting Club, where I first discovered his work and became a devoted fan. His art frequently appears in international magazines, and he’s a sought-after speaker at prestigious events.
Joining Richard was his close friend and fellow artist, Scott Hamill. A native Californian, Scott has found his artistic voice in the plein air tradition, capturing the essence of natural landscapes with remarkable depth and beauty. You can explore his stunning works at Scott Hamill Fine Art.
I was thrilled when Richard and Scott agreed to host their painting workshop at Lake Ohau and stay with us at the Quarters.
The retreat was a transformative experience for everyone involved. Painting outdoors, surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of Lake Ohau and its serene valleys and streams, created the perfect setting for learning and creativity. Under Richard and Scott’s expert guidance, participants explored expressive painting techniques while forging meaningful connections. The camaraderie was palpable as everyone shared their artistic journeys, supported one another, and celebrated each other’s achievements.
Our time together was filled with laughter, creativity, and unforgettable moments. A reunion of the “Lake Ohau Legends” is already in the works for 2026—and with how quickly time flies, it feels just around the corner!
If you’ve ever considered trying plein air painting, this retreat showcased why it’s such an enriching experience. From the joy of painting in nature to the friendships formed, it’s an adventure that stays with you. Consider joining Richard’s Painting Club or signing up for one of his art tours—you won’t regret it.
So grab your paints, gather some friends, and embrace the magic of painting outdoors. Who knows, your next masterpiece might be waiting just beyond the horizon!
